How to clean Birkenstocks

Fortunately, cleaning your Birkenstock sandals or shoes is relatively straightforward. Here’s a general guide:

  1. Remove Dirt and Debris: Use a soft brush or cloth to remove any loose dirt or debris from the surface of your Birkenstocks. This step will make the cleaning process more effective.
  2. Spot Clean Stains: If there are any specific stains or spots on your Birkenstocks, you can spot clean them using a mild soap or detergent mixed with water. Gently scrub the stained area with a soft brush or cloth until the stain lifts.
  3. Clean Footbed and Straps: For the footbed and straps, you can use a solution of mild soap or detergent mixed with water.  When I was a kid, my Mom would always tell me to use Woolite for stuff like this.   Dip a soft cloth or sponge into the solution and gently wipe down the footbed and straps, paying attention to any areas with dirt or stains. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the materials.
  4. Rinse Thoroughly: After cleaning, rinse your Birkenstocks thoroughly with clean water to remove any soap residue. Make sure to rinse both the footbed and straps to ensure all soap is removed.
  5. Air Dry: Allow your Birkenstocks to air dry naturally, away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Avoid using a hairdryer or placing them near a heater, as excessive heat can damage the materials. Stuffing them with newspaper can help them retain their shape as they dry.
  6. Condition (optional): If your Birkenstocks are made of leather, you can optionally apply a leather conditioner after they have dried to keep the leather supple and prevent it from drying out or cracking. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific conditioner you choose.
  7. Regular Maintenance: To keep your Birkenstocks looking their best, it’s a good idea to regularly clean them and remove dirt and debris after each use. This will help prevent buildup and prolong the life of your sandals or shoes.

By following these steps, you can effectively clean your Birkenstocks and keep them looking great for years to come.
